Way too hot. The hike is on the west slope, and in the afternoon you just cook. SAR pulls out somebody almost every weekend with heat stroke and dehydration.

If I want to do the Catalinas in the summer I drive all the way up to the top where it is cooler. There's a pretty good hanging spot about 2 miles from the TH, but there is no water anywhere up there so you have to dry camp.

It hit 115° here in Havasu yesterday and that's the outlook for the rest of the summer. Pick a place with some altitude, trees and available drinking water and I will be a happy camper! Don't get me wrong...I love the heat because I'm on the water most of the summer. But when it comes down to me and my hammock I need a little natural air conditioning! Everywhere I go from Havasu is a drive so I don't care what the mileage is. Frisco Box Trail that kwpapke suggested sounds very inviting.

I'm also planning to do the Chiricahua's as well...
    This also sounds appealing....

I would also be in for a trip in July. Weekend of 24th is better than 18th for me, but I'll go with consensus. Always wanted to check out the higher elevations of Southern AZ.

I am back from my Oregon/Wisconsin trip and starting to think about the next outing. I can do this Saturday night. Chiricahuas?

There's also been a LOT of rain by Sierra Vista/Huachucas. We could do Carr Canyon if car camping was important.

Would love to see the Chiricahuas. I am out of town the next two weekends, but would love to try anytime after that. Car camping is not priority, rather walk always to get away from the crowds personally.

Did a portion of the Crest Trail in the Chiricahuas this weekend with the Tucson Backpacking club. The good news is there are still plenty of trees to hang from along the trail, though they are in patches - you can't just hang anywhere, but plenty of places to do so if you pick the right spot. Rustler Park TH is a mixed bag for hanging - there's a couple of spots to hang from, but I ended up using one of the picnic shelters:

I'd be up for going again later this Fall if anyone is interested.
