Need some help on wha to do

I am, hopefully, going to be getting myself a JRB MWUQ 4 whenever the next sell comes around. I have read a recent thread dealing with overstuffing a UQ and what that means. My question to y'all is if I should get the MWUQ 4 overstuffed and if so by how much. I'm just not sure if their warmest quilt really needs to be overstuffed.

Unless you plan to exceed the lower temp rating, I would not bother.

The overstuffed Yetis seem to do a better job of dealing with heat loss due to wind in my experience. But, angrysparrow is probably right. Unless you are really going to be putting it to the test, I wouldn't bother.

As above, unless you are going below zero ( the extreme rating in the range of 0-10) why would you bother? Can this overstuff be ordered from JRB? Even if it can, most likely it can not be ordered during a sale, but who knows.

Of course, if you are planning winter trips in the AZ mtns, you may well be out below zero. But that probably won't be the norm, though single digits will be fairly common. But depending on how far you are planning on pushing it, and how often, I might simply experiment with beefing it up. First thing coming to mind is a space blanket/vapor barrier. Which should get you at least 10*F ( in my limited experience) plus have the great value of keeping your body moisture from condensing in your down. Then with or without this barrier, you could add JRB's breathable cover to do a better job of keeping wind and rain out of your down.

Then of course, the old standby for freakishly and unexpectedly cold nights, a pad in the hammock, with or without all of the above. Plus, I think it is worth some experimentation to use some narrow flexible pads under the hammock and on top of the UQ. These snug fitting designs might be able to hold the pads tight against your back, gaining warmth without the hassle of a pad in the hammock. But, it has the potential to decrease warmth, if it causes a poor fit for the UQ---- experimentation first highly recommended. Or if you have a JRB Bridge, ( or maybe other double layer hammocks) just put a pad in the pad pocket, with very little comfort decrease. Regardless, a LEG pad right inside the hammock is highly recommended. At least per my personal experience, it is nearly unnoticeable, and will give a big warmth boost for legs and feet. No need to even bother with the pad pocket IMO.

Ummm....when I asked the Jacks, they told me the MW4 is already overstuffed. You may be better off asking them directly what to get rather than asking "the amateurs" like us!!

I figured I should just order it as is. I just didn't know how many people ordered their quilts with additional over-stuff, I didnt want to be left out I figured I would post this poll and go with the majority. Due to the cost of these underquilts (compared to the amount of use I will give them) I need to make sure I get the ONE that is right for me. The last thing I want to tell my wife is I need another quilt because that one was not warm enough

On occasion I might be...I guess. Does that help? I think I will mostly be doing winter campouts on the Mogollon rim, Im not really sure what temps to expect up there. I'm thinking of ordering it normal and then using pads or blankets to offset the difference when I need it. I imagine more of the problem will be venting on warmer-than-expected nights. I mostly didnt know if it was standard procedure to order a quilt overstuffed or not.

Have used the MW4 at sub freezing temps(+20*F). Plenty warm. If you plan to experience real cold nights bring along a pad & space blanket. May need both if needing to ground it. As is the MW4 is overkill for my cold night needs.
