Turtledog without the crossbeam? ....for the beach

I'm heading to the beach in the near future and really want to enjoy a hammock. Whats yall's opinion on a turtledog stand but without the crossbar? Would guying out the backside, if done strong enough, suffice to keep the stands from toppling on top of me? I'm trying to go as light as possible, so also thinking of just doing 2 cross legs and guying those out, but I've never actually used any stand like this, so not sure whats possible and whats not. What say you???

Nice...i guess i can spend a few dollars and try out the partial turtle dog and use trees as the tie downs. If that works, i just need to figure out a solid anchor for use in the sand.

Would require some substantial anchors for the guys especially in the beach sand. If it does fail keep in mind that the bumps will be coming from the bottom and the top.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Very true...worst case i'll need a full turtledog setup. If that's the case i'll try and find the lightest and most compact way to go about it.

If you are going to use guys, why not go with a monopole with 3 guys. The poles should be tilted away from the hammock at about 60° to horizontal. Use long stakes for sand, probably 18" minimum. There are a few threads on the forum detailing the design.

There's also a bi-pole design where the two poles are hinged at the top and set in an A-frame, again tilted at 60°, with one or two guys. The legs of the A-frame are set perpendicular to the centerline of the hammock, giving the setup lateral stability.

The bi-pole is what I originally imagined. I'll have to setup and take down every day so the fewer guys the better.

I've done a monopole setup with 2 guys. I also used some amsteel for a ridge line so it is easier to set up and get dialed in. The challenge is in the stakes.

Good to hear. I'm thinking of using a 2 foot square piece of plywood with an eyebolt in the middle as the stake. Buried deep enough I think that should hold.
