    New Guy In Illinois

    Hello all.
I've been sitting here reading the forum for a couple weeks now. I was searching for a sleeping system for a camping weekend my cousin roped me into. Up until now my wife and I have been camping in a small fiberglass trailer for the last two years, and this was to be my first non-camper camping trip since I was a wee lad.
Anyway, looking around for something light weight and easy to use I stumbled upon hammocks and thought, why not. I bought a cheap one on Amazon then found this forum while searching for how to best utilize this purchase. Reading and Reading here i went to Harbor Freight bought a couple $4 ratchet straps, and hung the Amazon hammock in the yard and took a nap. It was a bit small, so I went and ordered 4 yards of nylon from dutch as well as a couple amsteel loops. Two nights before the camp out, I was sitting in front of the thread injector hastily sewing hems and a channel. In 5 hours i had the hammock sewn as well as a fronky style bug net.

The trip went well, two nights in my hammock with a cheap 40 degree sleeping bag on a 65 degree night got a bit chilly on the bottom but survived. The second night saw the arrival of a severe thunderstorm and my cheap-o 11x11 Harbor Freight poly tarp saved me from being soaked to the bone. I'm actually looking forward to a few more trips now.

I'm a huge DIY/MYOG kinda guy, so I've got a bug to try my hand at silnylon now and making a better tarp. I intend to take this hammock with us on our camper camping trips as well for a nice place to lounge and chill after doing shorter day hikes around the parks we stay at.

Thanks for all the info you guys have amassed on this site. It made my foray into making and sleeping in a hammock so much easier.

    Welcome! Where at in Illinois?
Get lost in the woods and find yourself again. A vacation,to me, is working with your hands and surviving because of the fruits of your labor. In the business world I teach;in the natural world I learn.

Welcome from West Michigan...formerly from Ballwin, MO - across da river!
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, make sure I stay here.

When I see lovers' names carved into a tree, I don't think it's cute. I think it's strange how so many people take knives on a date.
