Got to try my Kelty 12 on a canoeing trip last weekend. Pitched in square mode as this provided enough coverage. I use a ridge line above the tarp as I find it easier to adjust. Set it up in porch mode with some sticks found in the woods. Worked great.

    YMMV.

We had a storm and there was a guy who got wet with his Kelty Noah 12. While I've heard great things about the tarp, and reviews are positive, I just wonder how waterproof it really is.

I am considering the 12. Isn't heavy? Can you get it in a backpack?

I had a Noah 12 but sold it two weeks ago. I still have the Noah 9. It's a little heavy and really susceptible to wind gusts in diamond mode. Never had mine leak or wet through. The 12 is heavy but what I found worse was trying to stuff it in the tall and really narrow stuffsack it comes with. If I had to use another 12, I'd ditch the narrow stuffsack for a wider one.

Picked up the Noah's 12 I think on sale from Memorial Day. Couple things, it is a little heavy, but I don't count ounces too much, plus with my budget the price was right, especially for a newbie. First night using it on a backpacking trip it poured and I stayed completely dry, worked great. Not too crazy about the bag that comes with it, the square bag with zipper is a little bit of a pain. Found a youtube video that someone said to use one of the drybag stuffsacks from the three pack you get from Walmart. The mid sized red bag is a perfect fit.
I dropped my son off at Boyscout camp Sunday night and I used it again. Again worked out great and spent Monday playing with different configurations. I brought a bunch of different sizes of line and put it in porch mode, closed the doors ect. With all the tie outs very easy. Left the whole set up, up for the week to see if any of the boys want to give a hammock a try. When I go back Friday night see if they used it at all.20150803_090335.jpg

I have a Noah 12 and really like it. I agree with the frequent criticism that it's a little difficult to keep it perfectly taut -- my WB MJ tarp is much better in this regard. It's not super light, but I wouldn't call it heavy especially for the size. I would rather take my big Noah and pitch in bunk bed configuration than take two WB MJ's, for example. I've never pitched it with doors like @mbal1856 -- that's a cool idea. For the money I think this tarp can't be beat.

ps. I agree that the stuff sack it comes with is awkward. That sack is designed to look good in a store display, but doesn't work for camping or backpacking.

I use my Gobi Gear roll. One section holds my WBBB XLC, one section the Kelty 12 and one section for lines, straps and pegs
