    Camping "Platforms" question.

Does anyone have pictures of the “Tent Platforms” in the whites & other places? Specially as they might relate to Hanging. I have tried to find some on WB & elsewhere, to no avail. I do not need this info myself, at least not for a few years, but I’m betting some would find it useful, & others would find it informative.

I have yet to attempt to set up with no trees, as I just can’t bring myself to sleep on the ground again. Was / am planning on trying it tomorrow & got to thinking that at these campsites this technique would be useful, but without actually going there, I’m unsure as to what is needed.

    Thanks!

For the record, you don't have to use these in the White Mountain National Forest. Going off trail is OK, with restictions, see

Hiking in the White Mountains is what got me off the ground in the first place.

Wow, that answered all my questions & then some! For what ever reason, I always assumed that there were NO trees at these sites. From the pictures on the site there seem to be ample hanging spots.

    Thanks!!!!!

you can't see all the way around the platform in the picture, but if you had a strong enough hammock support rope/webbing, you could probably reach trees on both sides if you wanted to hang over the platform instead of going off trail.
of course you never know what you're going to run into until you get there. so i see your point about knowing how you would want to set up... gulp... on the ground... if you HAD to
but i believe i'd have to do what grizzly suggested & go off trail before i did that.

    Whites Rock

I did the Whites in my HH ULBA hammock when I thru'ed in 03. I'm using my homemade one this July 4. I think the only extended time above the treeline is the Presidentials and most can make it in one day. This year I'm staying at the lake of the clouds hut but you could stay in the "dungeon" (under the hut). From there you will be able to get to the osgood campground shown in the pictue. Packrat form the "Hikers Welcome hostel" in glencliff has a great stealth campsight map and does shuttles. Also if you go on AMC'S (I hate the AMC by the way, Jerks are selling our own national park to make it a yuppie playground with their $75 bunks and $8 shelters....control youself). websight they have shuttles that go from Pinkham Notch to Franconia Notch and all points in between. In any case all the campgrounds and shuttles are in hammockable woods. The whites are absolutley breath taking.

    Peace Dutch

Oh Ya! I canoed out in the Dismal Swamp in July one time and the Deer Flies were killing me. I could hardly paddle for swatting. And you sweat the bug spray off as quick as you put it on. I think real early spring would be the best time around here for a canoe trip.
If you must choose between two evils, opt for the one you've never tried before

I'm lucky up here with bugs on canoe trips. I also end up doing most of my overnight trips in the fall/winter/spring. Great time of the year to be on the water. This winter I want to try it with snow on the ground. I should add that there is a lot bigger danger and risk if you tip and go for a swim.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Pardon the blur, but it was raining. Just to the left of the tree in the foreground you will see the corner of the tent platform. That is how close I was hanging to it. (Bigelow, Maine)

Old Spec is a 4000 footer in the Mahoosucs of Maine along the AT just north of Mahoosuc Notch.
