    Carabiners?

    Hey guys,

I'm new to hammocks and just received my BB a few weeks ago. I have only set it up twice but have a question I have not seen answered: do the carabiners used on the strap suspension need to be of climbing quality? or are the cheap ones from Wal-Mart alright?

    Thanks,
    Drew

yes. I've opened the give-away biners just by tightening up the ridgeline- before any weight is in hammock- sping for the Nanos; your back will thank you for saving it from the ground...\

Definitely get something that is weight-rated. The Wally World cheapies, or any other "accessory" type biner, will leave you on the ground in very short order.

Others more knowledgeable will fill you in, but in short - stick with climbing quality. The Walmart (et al) carabiners are just not strong enough.

Any idea where you can get weight rated biners in FL? Not exactly a huge climbing market down here (man, I miss NC). What are my lightest options for weight-rated carabiners?

Order online from REI, Campmor, Moosejaw, etc.

Personally, I'd skip the 'biners and get a set of Dutch Clips from the HF store. You get to hang your hammock and the proceeds go to support HF. Sounds like a win-win if ever there was one.

Consider ordering on line from an outfitter. REI.Com would ship to you, unless you wanted to run to your "local" store just 300 miles away in Atlanta.

Another option to consider would be the Dutch Clips now in the HF Store.

Dang, Hooch beat me to the punch, but at least I have the link above.

You can mail order from any sporting good retailer - I've gotten four and six dollar climbing biners from backcountry.com and sierratradingpost.com. I figured any climbing rated biner would do, I'm not going to be hanging a half mile off the ground, after all. :P
