New to backpacking, new to Colorado and looking into hammocks

    Hello everyone,

I became interested in backpacking a few years ago. I haven't had much experience camping, but I really love hiking. So I figured why not sleep outside and keep hiking the next day? I started accumulating gear, but I didn't enjoy living outdoors in hot and humid Texas. I moved to Colorado about 2 years ago, and I would spend every day outside here if I could. I love the weather, mountains and the plentiful streams.

I've been camping a few times here, but I never really enjoyed it that much. I already have a touch of insomnia and then it never seemed like I could not get comfortable enough to fall asleep. Last year I looked at hammocks but decided against it in case I ever wanted to camp above treeline or take the dogs with me. I rarely hike above tree line and I am usually by myself. Yeah, looking back there wasn't a lot of logic in that thought process. But I'm also a stomach sleeper, and it seems like that may not be possible in a hammock. Well, it's barely possible in a tent too!

So now I'm considering hammocks again. I've been watching some videos and I read the Ultimate Hang as well. I think I might grab one of the more affordable brands and give it a try. I'm going out later this week for a quick 1 night, 2 day trip. I won't have a hammock by then, but I will probably cement the idea that I need to get one. You know, while I toss and turn all night :/

i miss Colorado grew up in Denver in the 70's and we didn't miss a chance to get up into the mountains. but you need to remember one thing about the mountains, and that's called a tree line. so if you plan on camping up there you will need a hammock that can go to ground so to speak. and enjoy.

    Welcome,

My wife is a side/stomach sleeper and she uses a BMBH from Jacks R Better.

Good luck on the hammock hunt.

I sleep on my side or stomach on a bed or couch. Mostly side or back in a hammock, yet have woken up on my stomach. Somehow much more restless in a bed.

Takes some fiddling to find what works best for you in a hammock. Once you find it: suh-weet!!

Hopefully the gathered end hammock that I ordered will suit me. If not, I will try out a bridge style. Thanks for the welcome!
