Cat Cut or not, and why...Winter Haven

    I'm looking at a winter haven. http://www.simplylightdesigns.com/ca...roducts_id/213

I'm not sure to get cat cut or not. To me it looks cooler to do cat cut, but doesn't it give less room inside when doors are closed? What is the benefit of cat cut?

    Thanks!

Cat cut helps you get a more taut pitch of the tarp so the fabric is less flappy.

With silnylon, cat cuts are almost essential to be able to keep the fabric taut. Once the tarp is hung, the nylon will stretch a bit.

On silpoly, it's less of an issue since poly has minimal stretching.

Cat cut's are going to be beneficial for a taut pitch on any tarp, period. The reason is the way lines of tension run through the material makes it difficult to keep the edges taut in a straight cut tarp (usually requiring more pull outs - hence the option of adding a mid pull out on the striaght tarp)

And to clairify: Silpoly still stretches, it just doesn't stretch FURTHER when wet (the main concern with silNylon, which cat cut's don't address anyway).

FWIW, have you looked at the Warbonnet Superfly? It's a similar type of tarp, but goes for $130 + shipping (maybe $10?) . A similar Winter Haven would be ~$160.

I'm going for multicam, so the stretchy silnylon will be worth it. Nobody will ever find me with multicam...

There were a couple of army/national guard guys (dressed in camo) at the counter at Next Level Burger. I didn't have the guts to do it but in my mind I played out the scenario where I would go up an bump into one of them. Then I'd say, "I'm sorry. I didn't SEE you." Then I'd turn to leave and bump into the other one. I figured it would be a test of their sense of humor. I felt bad that I wimped out. Maybe next time ... if I ever see them again.

I've got Jared's Winter Haven in a 12 and a 11 foot Trail Haven. Both are cat cut and I'm very happy with how they pitch. For winter trips I just clear the snow from underneath, hang the tarp and build up a snow wall around the perimeter. Is also recommend the pole mod. Adds a ton of room inside. SLD also ships super fast. And the quality is top notch.
