I'm a 21-year-old kid from Southern Illinois who's been tent camping all my life. I just got into backpacking about 4 years ago, I go when my bank account and school schedule allow me to. In the spring of 2017 (after I graduate college), I plan to begin my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, so I'm slowly gathering gear and finding what I like and what needs to go.
The last trip I went on was with my two brothers, we went to the Ouachita NF, in Arkansas in early spring. Our first night on the trail it rained.....HARD. We were laid up on all kinds of rocks and roots, three 200+ pound guys in a small 3-man tent, one soaked sleeping bag (my brother's tent turned out to not be waterproof). That was the night I chose to move to a hammock.
I bought a Grand Trunk Double, and an OES Maccat Deluxe SilPro tarp (the latter being a present) to get me started. I've found I'm a bit of a gear nut, so I've spent a good amount of time combing through the hammockforums.
I hope to find even more useful info here, not thinking that'll be too tough! Thanks to everyone here and their endless knowledge, maybe I can add some experiences of my own sometime. Cheers!
