    under quilt question

I just made a synthetic underquilt--------sort of a modified KAQ inspired design. My question is...........1. do most people store the hammock in their pack with the underquilt attached, or do you keep the hammock and UQ seperate? 2.how small of a stuff sack does the KAQ fit into, without damaging the loft? As far as that goes, with any quilt, how can you tell how small of a stuff sack you can put it into without damaging the loft.? Thanks for the help!

I store down or syn in a large cloth sack with no compression. As far as packing for a trip ... pack as tight as you want ... unleash it in camp as early as you can ... shake it out and hang it. It'll loft up fine by the time you hit the sack!

I don't have an UQ yet, but my down bag lofts immediately when I break it out at camp. I don't store it in a stuff sack - I hang it over a line in my toy closet.

I have tried it both ways and prefer to remove the UQ from the hammock and pack it in my pack separately. I don't use a stuff sack, I just put it in the bottom of my pack (on top of foodbag) and then cram everything else in on top. That way the UQ only compresses as much as it needs to during the day.

I tried making a snakeskin that would cover both the hammock and the UQ without crushing it too much and found it both huge and awkward.

I remove mine from the hammock and pack it in a compression sack. My UQ is synthetic so I don't crush the heck out of it but I do squeeze it down pretty good. I get it out of the sack promptly when I make camp to minimize the time it's compressed.

Another one here that prefers to pack seperately. The suspension should be so quick and easy that it is a snap to attach. My hammock sometimes gets twisted when I pack it away and I bet a quilt would confuse the problem

Yeah ... me too. Stringing out together might be a little tricky late at night if it were twisted as well. None that I've used have been that tough to rig .. so never really seen the need to combine. KAQ that I just got couldn't be any simplier if I tried!
