    Hammock with built in Undequilt

I was watching one of Shug's Trip reports, and I saw something kinda neat. I believe his trail name is Strung Out, and he built his own Hammock with a built in camo bug net and Underquilt. I was wondering if there was another maker that made a hammock like this, and if not, why not?

    Hammock with built in Undequilt

They are great but you have to watch the temps carefully because you have no way to vent a connected UQ from the hammock. I have seen a sheltowee and it is a bit more stretchy and good coverage. I think the benefit would be less fiddle factor.

The built-in UQ is really a niche product, as it can only go down to the temps for which it is designed. I expect it to remain a niche product.

This review at the Ultimate Hang gave the impression that it's possible to vent the underquilt. From all I read, it's a nifty design. I would definitely be interested in trying an insulated hammock. My main concern is not that I'm going to be too warm, but that I might not like the lay of the hammock...

I think the sheltowee can be vented but not one in which the UQ is stitched to the hammock. At least that is my understanding

I'm no expert either, and I haven't seen any insulated hammocks, yet, but both the Sheltowee as well as the Bonefire hammock are double layer hammocks with the underquilt only sewn to the bottom layer. I think the reason for this is to not weaken the load bearing layer by stitches. By using two layers, you can potentially vent the underquilt, but in the end it depends on the design. The Bonefire hammock seems to lack the venting-option.

Strung Out's is designed for certain temps and buggy season seems to me. I for one have never ever vented any of my UQs on a trip so it may be of no concern. Really, you cant expect one hammock to do it all especially one with it's insulation sewn on. If you to get to want lower temps then maybe stack another UQ on it. We had nights in the low 50ºs to high 40ºs.
He sure seemed comfy in it.
