    Asym Questions

I've been trying to figure out exactly what Asymmetrical implies with hammocks. I checked the glossary/acronym list and tried searching, but couldn't find anything that satisfied. Could someone kindly explain it? I know it's generally associated with Hennesy Hammocks, but that the BB also considers itself an Asym.

    Thanks!

Asym means not symetrical. What it really means is you don't lay strait down the center. Your head is one way and your feet is the other. The HH has tye out that make the hammock asymetrical and the user make the BB asym by placing their feet in teh foot box.

The HH tie outs are offset from each other. The bug net is also not symmetrical. If you were to fold it on its axis they would not match.

I know what Asymmetrical means, let me be a little more specific. How does Asymmetry affect the lay of the hammock? Is there an impact/improvement on shoulder squishing (I have broad shoulders)? Is there an impact on weight (more fabric)? Is there advantages, disadvantages, or (as everything in life) trade-offs in areas? Why do people prefer asymmetry in their hammocks? Does this affect compatibility with insulation (can I use a peapod)?

Thanks for your responses! Weisenber was right (don't tell him I said that, I may owe him a Yoo Hoo), there's a world of information and options outside of ENO

the diagponal lie... that is head on one side of the center line, feet on the other provides a flatter more comfortable lay in most cases for most people. The gathers at the ends of the hammock spread out and make it you have a flat space to sleep. That being said... My home sleeper is not Asym in design and yet still provides a very nice flat lay. Some folks might consider it a gimmick. I don't have a lot of experience in anything but my home sleeper and my HH. (other than a bridge hammock which is a whole different ketttle of fish.) I can't say whether it is a essential design element or just a selling point that sounds good.

My experience is also somewhat limited, but I feel that the asym cut of the HH does allow me a flatter, more comfortable lie than the cheap gathered end hammocks I have. (Not that gathered end hammocks are cheap by default but the ones I own are)

That said, there are many people here who own high quality gathered end Speer hammocks and love them. Also the BB isn't technically an asym.

I think the asym cut mostly gives you some extra room at the head and foot so the material isn't crowding you when on the diagonal and my provide less shoulder squeeze.

Don't think you can do a peapod with an asym but many UQs will work.

Probably the bigger decision is if you like or dislike the bottom entry and fixed bugnet. You can get the zipper mod offered by 2Questions, but that will cost extra.

Thanks all. I'm not considering a HH because of the bottom entry. I am considering a BB though. The fact that it doesn't work with the peapod is...disappointing because I have a sick attraction to them for some reason.

The HH bottom entry is easy to get around with 2Q & ZQ's mod; they'll even stitch the bottom entry closed for you.

Of course, the BB is a much better choice IMO. BillyBob58 has done some experimenting with a BB and PeaPod combo. If I remember correctly, he said that it does work; just not as efficiently. If you want it to really work, just don't stake out the 'wings' and throw the bug net over. It won't change the lay of the hammock noticeably and should still allow you to use the PeaPod in the manner intended. I say this without actually trying it, so there's that.

edit: I really need to call my CC company and tell them to lower my limit...just in case I get an itch.
