    MA: Safe solo hanging

I would like to try my first solo hang, preferably in a State Park located not too far from Central Massachusetts.

I am unable to make the group hang this upcoming weekend but, do you have any suggestions on a nice, clean, safe park for my first overnight test? (I live in an apartment, so no backyard).

    Thanks.

This group has been to the The Pines several times and it is nice and hammock friendly.

If you call, mention this group and they might help pick out a good site for you, if available.

===> Second The Pines Campground in Ashby MA. Owners name is Paul, and he has been more than accommodating to the NEHHA hangers. Ask to hang on the left side of the road heading on past all the RVs. Nice place! Mention us. Enjoy! When are you planning on going? Might join you there! (Unless you really want to hang solo!) Good Luck!

I'm with the other folks on a big thumbs up for the Pines Campground in Ashby. As Skypainter said, the Owner is Paul and he is a great guy and very accommodating. Their contact info is:

    Pines Campground
    39 Davis Road
    AShby, MA 01431
    (978) 386-7702

Be sure to mention that the NEHHA folks referred you. They'll treat you right. (We don't get commissions or anything, we're just loyal).

If that doesn't work out for you, I just finished a long week-end at Otter River State Forest in Baldwinville:

    Otter River State Forest
    86 Winchendon Road
    Baldwinville, MA 0436

It is a pretty busy campground but that might be a good think for your first official "Solo".

From Otter Creek, you can take a nice day hike through the woods on a well established trail, to Lake Dennison.

Anyway, let us know what you decide.

    All the best.

And just to add another option....we stay or used to, at Wellington in Sturbridge. Nice park, no wild animals I have seen.

Other than when I visit that is.
If it moves, you can eat it. No promises you will think it tastes good.

    Bruce,

You won't be disappointed. Nice area. Good access to civilization within two miles of the State Park entrance in case you forgot something or run out of something. If you go, let me know what you think of the place.

    All the best!
