I hadn't though much about the compressive load though, good point. With all of that, it seems that bamboo turtledog stands would be easier and lighter. .

Our usage will be infrequent, 2-4 nights a month on average would be at the high end.
You could certainly do a hybrid of them. use your hitch mount T bar to be one end of the turtlelady / turtledog stand and hang the compressive load bar (or bamboo) from it with the other end hung by a tripod.
Or go ahead with full stands, note that you only need three tripods to hang 2 (or three) hammocks.

I have not seen it done, so I do not have a picture of it. But here is the pic of the stand and instead of one of the legs you could just lash it to the truck's946c9edfe51e3ac5d6f8481ba849dd7f.jpg rack.

Or there was a post about a trailer that you can hang a hammock from. Maybe you could incorporate their ideas into your roof rack.

And then maybe each person could hang on the sides of the truck. With one massive tarp over the whole truck

There are a few ideas on this thread that may help you if you are looking for a solution that only uses your truck for both anchor points. They would take a bit of work to build but it sounds like labor and materials shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully it helps.

Any progress on this? I have a JKU and I am considering installing a front receiver hitch in addition to the one in the rear. From there I am thinking I can have a solid L shaped piece inserted into the receiver on which a tall, telescoping, 2", square tube would slide onto. I think it will work. MY primary concern is the strength of the front receiver. This would be like the etraler bolt on model and they certainly aren't designed with this application in mind. I could add another telescoping bar across the top to link them together but I am not sure it will be needed without first trying it out.
I considered just mounting brackets of solid steel to the roof rack after stumbling across a post by someone who had done that to a Toyota FJ. However, I have a soft top and the rack is not mounted to top itself like on a FJ as well as some hard top jeeps.
