Things that go knock in the night

This isn't really about hammocks per se, except that I was in one when I heard this. So twice in the Adirondacks, I've been woken up by tree knocking sounds. It sounds exactly like wood on wood or stone on wood. It's usually two evenly spaced knocks and is almost always answered in the same way by something farther away. Occasionally it's more than two knocks but is always answered the same. This past weekend, the knocking was being done by three separate critters, one of which was pretty far away. All internet searches I've done direct me to Bigfoot sites, which is not helpful. Any ideas? Anybody else encounter this?

    Here is 1 possibility. . . https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XTw1lzxTAis
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, make sure I stay here.

When I see lovers' names carved into a tree, I don't think it's cute. I think it's strange how so many people take knives on a date.

Funny you post this. On my last trip to the BWCA with Alex and Strung Out we heard the same thing. And I kept saying it was a very Sasquatchy area))))) Strung Out and I took the canoe out for a midnight paddle and went down into the Sasquatch Bay as I called id and we too heard the double knock sond. Like wood on wood. Mostly it was two knocks. In rapid succession. But there was also a single knock a couple of times. I was joking that maybe it was watching and knocking twice for "two in canoe" and a single knock for "one in camp".
    Seriously.

I would think that, since there are less encounters with bigfoot than with black bears, they are probably just letting the kin folk, and other critters know that you are there. Sleep well in your hammock

I concur. No Sasquatch deaths have I ever heard. Like wolves....just curuious I think. Nothing disturbs my hammock nod.

It's just bothersome to me that something so common, at least by Bigfoot aficionados, doesn't have an answer. One site thought American Bittern or Barred Owl. Plenty of owls in the ADK' s so it could be that. I'm also thinking maybe some kind of tree frog as they can be pretty loud. Whatever the source, I'm not buying the Bigfoot/aliens/Elvis explanations.

Lots of campers in the north country. Log to log is the best way to get firewood. I do it all the time.. amazing how sound travels.
