    Dutch Hook Failure?

I've got some Dutch bling and am very satisfied with the quality. Has anyone ever had a Dutch Hook fail? I purchased a Superfly from a forum member several months ago. complete with a continuous ridgeline with a Dutch hook and wasp. I love the simplicity. Last weekend I did a three day in the Deam wilderness on Monroe Reservoir. Sat. night brought a pretty good thunderstorm with some heavy winds. My Dutch hook snapped and I lost the ridgeline in the middle of the storm. It could have been disastrous if I hadn't already been up trying to close up the Superfly. (Note to self....Next time do this before the storm hits) It just so happened the RL was trapped under my suspension straps so I didn't lose the whole tarp. It just dropped and turned into a fluttering sail until I was able to re tie it to the suspension carabiner. That held and made it through the storm. Not busting Dutch or his products. The hook was used so I have no idea how old it was or if it had been abused and they're only a couple bucks. I guess I could ask if it's possible I hooked up wrong.... but how many ways are there to hook up a Dutch Hook?

I have never seen one fail before. However if trees get blowing in different directions during a storm, there is a potential for a tremendous amount of stress on the system. I of course will replace the hook.

I have put alot of pressure on a dutch hook, even spread them open wider with flat head screwdriver and pliers and have never been able to break one.
A Dutch hook snapping in half is very unusaull, never heard of it.

    I've never seen that happen.

I broke one about 3 years ago at Scout camp. I was setting up the tarp as a windbreak in about 30mph sustained winds and really put a ton of stress on the hook. It snapped in exactly the same place yours did.

I never mentioned it to Dutch because I was using the hook for something out of the realm if it's design, really. I've used the others I ordered at the same time since and not had any problems whatsoever. Love my Dutch hooks.

Dutch, I believe that's a very possible scenario in the case of that storm. I'm seriously not the least worried about replacing the hook. I will take care of that when I place my next order. Like I said who knows what it's been through before I got it.

Scout Camp us know for testing the outer limits of all gear!

I carry one of those "hang your pack on the tree things with made with a Dutch hook and think of it as a backup tarp ridgeline extender for when the trees are a little too far apart. It also would come in handy in the case of a hardware fail such as the one described.

I have several D hooks and all have been great. I can see if the trees where moving apart in a storm that would put a lot of force on the rigging.

This is actually a good thing. If the hook hadn't failed, it would have been a tear in the tarp.

A new Dutch Hook will cost you a few bucks, a new Cuben Fiber tarp a whole lot more. Even the flaws in Dutch gear is a strength.

Not "a flaw." Its a design feature! Just that you bring it up first!
