I'm in Modesto as well, and I'm heading out this Saturday to try and scout out a location. I think my friend and I will be heading up highway 4 to see what we can find.

Excellent, Good hunting, let us know what you find. I'm heading up to New Melones Lake this Saturday, don't think I'll be able to hang but I'm taking my gear with me just in case. I think the big issue is that there isn't a lot of trees so...

To give an update, we did go out exploring today in search of a potential group hang location. Ended up heading eastbound on highway 108 into Stanislaus National Forest, but that turned out to be a bust. The place I was going to check on turned out to be closed for the winter, so I couldn't even drive in to get a good look at things. Not that it helps our situation out much, but I did end up finding a nice spot to go four wheeling near Beardsley Reservoir. There looks to be some nice spots to camp back in there, but nowhere near big enough for a large group.

I'm a docent up at Columbia and one of the folk who live up there mentioned an area called Kennedy I believe, I won't be back up there until March, but I'm going to start trying to get more information. You'd think one of the park rangers would know a spot, but those guys and gals get moved around so much that I don't know if any of them actually have roots in the area.

I want to say there's ample space and trees at one of the campgrounds at Kennedy Meadows. That's probably the spot they're referring to. It's right past the meadow before the trail to Relief Reservoir, Kennedy Lake, and a bunch of other spots back in there. Soon as the road opens up, I can head in there to take a look. Highway 108 is still closed at the snow park, I believe.

Man, I got all excited when I saw a northern California group hang. I guess anything north of LA is considered north ca to you Southerners Lol;<), hope you find a spot and have fun.
By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...
