    Top quilt questions

Hi, Im trying to do lightweight backpacing in a Hennessy hammock. I asked on this forum about UQ's, and i think I've decided on a 20* Uq, beacuse I can use it in all 4 seasons. If I have that, could I get away with just using a 40* top quilt for low temps in the 20's?
    Thanks!

Sure, but only if you dress warm to make up the differance, a beanie or hat of some kind will help, long johns, wool socks, ect, ect..

I've never played the "get away with" game, though I know people who do. Personally, I always carry matching quilts so I don't have to play the "get away with" game!

I don't take too kindly to being cold. I would never take my 40* TQ and my 20* UQ for temps in the twenties. I did try it once and darn near froze to death - never got warm all night.

By the way, I'm neither a hot nor cold sleeper. However, I always take quilts that will give me a 10 degree cushion, minimum. There is no way to know how cold things will be when you go somewhere that doesn't have a weather station.

In the Pine Barrens, you can see temps that are up to 15 degrees colder than the closest weather station. I recall a night at the NJ Winter Hang where the Weather Channel said the low would be 18 degrees. However, when I arrived at Batona Camp at 6 pm, it was 13 degrees F. The low got down to 0* F on my thermometer, though some had the temp at -3* F.

I matched my 20 degree UQ with a 20 degree TQ. The way I figured it is I could always easily push the TQ to the side if need be...better than waking up cold. Of course, I bought a 50 degree TQ as well since I live in the south and have warm weather most of the year.

You could, but you'd have to bring more clothes for the colder range. I'd stick with the same temp rating, if you want to get the most out of the colder range. At the warmer end of the spectrum, you can always just drape the 20* TQ up to your armpits, blanket style, without sliding your feet into the footbox.

Plus 1 on the 10* cushion
I would never ever use a 40 TQ in 20* weather.
The 10* cushion is accurate for me and provides zero worries about being cold

I would match the quilt numbers. I know for Enlightened Equip top Quilts the weights are so light that my 10 degree weighs less than my 20 degree I purchased a couple years back. I would rather have the xtra rating for that couple xtra ounces.
