PA > Hickory Run State Park Bear Problem???

I am planning a trip to Lehigh George trail for some bike riding and because it's such a long drive I need somewhere close by to hang. When I called Hickory Run State Park they told me that they allow hammocks but they didn't recommend it because of the black bear problem. Does anyone from PA have an opinion or a safer alternative?

Hickory run is a nice park and I don't see an issue staying there if you have good camping habits.

But we have lots of private campgrounds in the area, I don't have much experience with any of them because I don't often car camp. But a quick Google search will give a lot of options. Make sure you check out Glen Onoko the most southern part of the gorge. Good little hike with some nice waterfalls.

a tent offers no added protection from a bear. If the bear wants in... a thin layer of fabric is not going to stop it. Good camping habits are your best defense no matter what you sleep in. Personally... I wouldn't worry about it. The whole "bear burrito" thing is overplayed in my mind. IMO I would opt for the state parks over private campgrounds for price and so many of the private campgrounds cater to the RV crowd. Keep a clean camp and you shouldn't have a problem.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I have been going to this campground for 30years and there is often a bear problem....I have seen many bears there that sit 50ft from you and do maintenance on there fur . I have seen them come up and steal breakfast a few times . I have seen them walk up and snif someone taking a nap in there cot out side of the tent .i have seen them scare people at night with a loud grunt/Grall ... So the Bears are very active there when they are coming into the campground . Sites 6-11 we stay at each year with 20-30people from newborn to 80 years old ....Bears they are there ...the sites We stay at are along a creek and have there own parking area and has a major hiking trail that connects to the network ...also they are walk in sites and are some of the best in the park ..

Also if you just don't like the idea of a Bears around you can get a site up by the road in the field ,you can hear traffic but lots of people camp up there just for that reason ... Sorry for all the posts just realized I could have used the edit button ..
