The other posts answered this well. I never spent the night, only hiked around in my younger days. There are quite a few spots for campers and the like to pull in as you drive the Trace. Hiking, you'll never veer too far from the road.

Yeah I had figured it would be a lot of road walking but didn't know if there was am actual hiking trail that ran beside the road. I do know that there are some hiking trails although I've never been on one. Stopped one time at a ranger station and across the street was a board walk hiking trail but I don't know how long it was our anything. All I do know was it was hot and humid and the ol lady said NO WAY. So needless to say we didn't even look into obtaining any info about it.

Much of the trace is a parkway road with some mostly short distance tourist trails to sites of interest. The Ridgeland Trail is a multi-use trail with emphasis on cycles, but is okay for hiking/running.

There are campgrounds listed on the website mentioned above, but camping elsewhere is not permitted without prior arrangement with the Rangers. They are a busy group and your odds of getting permission are not great in this area. Rocky Spring is a pretty nice option.

I am thinking of doing a motorcycle ride the whole length from Natchez this Fall and am studying camping options as well.
