Has hammock camping extended your camping season?

When I first got into hammock camping, all I heard from most groundlings . . . it’s so cold, it’s so cold. It's too difficult. Too much work. Takes too long in cold rainy weather. Can't do those knots when it's snowing.

Now that I'm more experienced, it's not more work and it's not more difficult. I just needed to practice and of course the right gear is a must.

I'm sooooo comfortable in a hammock now I find that that I’m camping MORE in cold weather, not less. When I was on the ground I wouldn’t camp much in shoulder seasons and winter. Nothing worse than being out in cold rainy weather AND being uncomfortable on the ground.

Was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

    Great question.

For me, it has lenthened the season. Not necessarily because of the cold, but because I didn't like ground camping in really wet weather. But because I'm no longer 'stuck in the mud', my favorite time to hike and hang is during the rain.

I've hiked in pretty cold temps back in the not-so-distant past of tent camping. Got my first taste of fall/winter camping at the Northern Hang last weekend. So I wouldn't say that it has extended my camping season.

I have, however, been out more frequently now that I'm hammocking and this has made me very happy.

Outstanding question! Personally, hammocking has extended my camping season to year round. It all just depends what kind of temps I feel like dealing with. For me, at least, it's a lot easier to get up on a cold morning after I'm well rested in a hammock than it is to crawl off the ground out of a tent, having tossed and turned all night long trying to get to sleep.

I hike and camp year round, and since converting to hammocking the only difference is that it took me close to a year to learn all the tricks to keeping really warm above the ground. I had over 50 years of experience on the ground before making the switch.

The hammock 'lifestyle' has definitely extended my camping season.

As a tent camper I was getting too cold when the temps dropped into the 30's.

This past weekend at the Northern Hang, the temps were down to 20 and I was warm. and that was with my cobbled together, homemade synthetic insulation. After I finish some new down projects, look out! I'm going to have to give winter camping a try.

    Thanks Hammock Forums!

It hasn't really changed my seasons, but it has changed the thought process. I used to look forward to cold weather trips because I could climb during the day without sweating, or because the bugs were gone.

Now I look forward to them because I want to see how cold my hammock will go, and mess around with different gear setups.

Reckon this means we'll be seeing you at the Winter Hang this year, Jerry. I went for the first time last year and wouldn't miss it again for the world!

Got into hammock camping just as I was getting back into the lifestyle. I wasn't camping at all before, save a few 'party camps' from time to time. So yeah, it's extended my seasons.

But, I have found myself out more and more when the weather takes a turn. I suspect a big reason for that is my natural disdain for the status quo. Somebody tells me it's too cold and it might as well be a double-dog dare, cause I'm a goin campin! And everybody tells me that it's too cold to camp in a hammock out here.
    Trust nobody!
