Well, since the idea of another group hang has been mentioned several times in this thread, it seems it is time to get something on the calendar. As Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit (aka KMSF-SU) generated a lot of interest last time, here's some thoughts on an Autumn group hang in that area.
Camp at a group site in Pinewoods campground (aka PW) near Dousman, WI. People could choose from a variety of activities there like hanging around camp , dayhiking, fishing, swimming, etc. I believe there are some sand volleyball courts in PW.
For the hikers among us, hiking to Shelter #1 (aka S1) is only 3.7 miles and from S1 to S2 is 7.5 miles. Which leaves me in a quandary as to whether it would be better to hike this as a through hike or as a dayhike. Maybe hang at the group site Friday, drive down Saturday to S2 and dayhike the 11 miles back to PW, then hang out Sunday?
The 10.7 miles from PW to Lapham Peak is almost all road walking. Even the portion of the Glacial Drumlin the IAT runs on is hard packed gravel on an old railroad bed with a thick wall of green on either side. Which is basically road walking also. Much better as a bikepacking trip than a hiking trip.
By the way, the weekend of September 25-27 would be in keeping with our "every other month on the last weekend of the month" theme that we've been on this year.
