Question WI>KMSF-SU>Pinewoods>Which Weekend for a 2015 Fall Group Hang Poll

Well, since the idea of another group hang has been mentioned several times in this thread, it seems it is time to get something on the calendar. As Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit (aka KMSF-SU) generated a lot of interest last time, here's some thoughts on an Autumn group hang in that area.

Camp at a group site in Pinewoods campground (aka PW) near Dousman, WI. People could choose from a variety of activities there like hanging around camp , dayhiking, fishing, swimming, etc. I believe there are some sand volleyball courts in PW.

For the hikers among us, hiking to Shelter #1 (aka S1) is only 3.7 miles and from S1 to S2 is 7.5 miles. Which leaves me in a quandary as to whether it would be better to hike this as a through hike or as a dayhike. Maybe hang at the group site Friday, drive down Saturday to S2 and dayhike the 11 miles back to PW, then hang out Sunday?

The 10.7 miles from PW to Lapham Peak is almost all road walking. Even the portion of the Glacial Drumlin the IAT runs on is hard packed gravel on an old railroad bed with a thick wall of green on either side. Which is basically road walking also. Much better as a bikepacking trip than a hiking trip.

By the way, the weekend of September 25-27 would be in keeping with our "every other month on the last weekend of the month" theme that we've been on this year.

    Thoughts? Questions?

I'll go if I can any weekend but I can not plan more then couple of days ahead of time

also most campsites are clear of trees , trees are sort of around each campsite so extra rope or straps would be good to bring

I'd love to come. Sooner might be better for me since, as previously mentioned, I'm a little light on insulation currently. I'm a hiker and typically cover 20-30mi/day solo, so I'd love to take a walk in the woods and should be able to keep up on anything planned in that regard. Or if someone else can bring a vball I'm game for that too.

One wrench in the works: I just found out this morning that my boss wants me to take a week's trip to New Brunswick to call on a client "in a month or so before it gets cold", which is probably going to be one week(end) in mid September that I definitely won't be able to come hang. He isn't the greatest about getting plans nailed down before the last minute, but I'll nag and see if we can get that trip locked in so I'll know for sure when I could come hang.

Or I'd be down for that, if Tumbleweed doesn't mind being seen in public associating with a metric.

The boss told me to pick a weekend and we'll schedule around it so I went with September 25-27 since that looks to be what works best for everyone else so far. I will definitely be available then, definitely will NOT be available for September 11-13 (another business trip just sprung on me today...) and can't guarantee I'd be able to make any other weekends at this point.

And here I was thinking we had gotten enough of a jump on things. Au contraire! Looking at Reserve America this morning I saw that all the group sites in Pinewoods are already reserved. There are four group sites in Hickory Woods (Whitewater Lake's group campsite loop) that are still available.

However, since there are only five of us interested so far and we can have up to six adults per regular camp site, we could use any normal site. Each loop has a few open sites, the trick will be to determine which are the most hangable. I noticed all of my favorites are already booked.

By the way, fees have gone way up in WI as of July 28th 2015. Used to be $12/night at a regular campsite, now it is $18/night. Campsites with electricity used to be $15/night, now are $28/night. Group sites used to be $25/night for groups with 1-20 people, now they are $40/night.

33 years teaching science, and owning lots of oriental bikes makes me comfortable with "metric".

That weekend actually works with my schedule, at least at this point in time! Count me in, possibly 2.

Since we're car camping I'll most likely have a bit of almost palatable homebrew to share

Did I hear stewed squirrel over the campfire YUMM!!
