My UQ has almost no influence to the lay or feel of my hammy.
Use synthetic for warmer temps and down for winter. This is based on compactability for hiking. Moisture not a concern on either but price is. If car camping, synthetic is less expensive and a full UQ is still less than a 3/4 down UQ.
Yup, loosen the UQ for warmer temps. A Summer series TQ/UQ is almost a Winter for us. I made a Summer TQ with 1/4" quilt batting and sewn footbox and it was great. I don't think it will go down to 40'sF or 50'sF for most. Maybe upper 50's lower 60's, but a colder UQ is way more forgiving and adjustable for warmer temps.
Good luck.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
If you don't mind weight and bulk, I like a synthetic sleeping bag when car camping. It adds some softness under you and because it doesn't compress as much it will add some insulation under you that you would not get from down.
I have a custom made -50 UQ for the winter hangs. Works great. I've use it to -36 so far and slept warm. I only use it from Nov to about March.
I've been using the HH supershelter in the warmer months for the past 4 years, but am looking into a 20 degree long underquilt to replace it.
I find the quilts much more comfortable compared to a pad, which I ditched almost immediately.
WHat area of the province are you in? Temp ranges vary a whole heck of lot from one end to the other.
