    Toady,

Are you traveling away from Austrailia? From what I see regarding the climate of your area, the coldest winter nights barely reach freezing.

Not planning to leave Aus. It could happen but very unlikely. From all the advice I think a 20* uq is a good middleground for the benefits of warmth and compactability. As posters have said, the difference can be made up for in the tq and through layers and such.

Depends on you. For instance, my father can be comfortable at cooler temps than myself, so when he feels comfortable in a 40* I know I need a 30* or 20*. Further i think the rating on commercial bags might be a survivability rating, and not really a comfort rating. I've got a 0* rated synthetic bag that I'm only comfortable in down to 40*

Also, always plan to be warm at a colder temp than you think your coldest temp will be. Like some one said up there^^^ "you can always vent", but more importantly, you can't add insulation you haven't brought

I replaced my pack padding with reflectix, so i always have it. Reflectix will let you go down to a much lower temp than your quilt or bag would on it's own
