Wow, that's a nice setup. Easy, too! It looks like if you ran a guy line from the "beak," you'd only really need 4 stakes (which you would already have) and 1 extra guy line for this. Looks bomb proof (or at least weather proof), too. Only thing would be if you were alone, you'd need to tie off the "awning" to a stick/tree as you'd only have two poles with you, but that's easy.

Thanks for posting this. I always keep "going to ground" in the back of my mind. For emergencies, only, of course.

You should beg forgiveness from the High Hammock Council for even thinking about going to ground, much less actually doing it.

I hear penalties meted out by the HHC can be quite severe...

Do they tell you to go to your hammock? Oh, the horror!

Ooo, the hammock natzis are out. Just kidding.

Let me first say, I pitched it, I did not sleep in it. I was hanging.
I need to have the ground option available as I camp exclusively with the scouts. In some places we camp, finding trees that are adequite for hanging are sparse. I've also started carrying trekking poles instead of my ski poles, so I'm not as comfortable about a single tree + poles hang. Also, at times my son would rather bunk with a fellow scout and since I've already got 2 tarps, I thought this would be a good option.

    You misspelled "nazis".

I believe the overall pentagon shape is going to require 5 stakes minimin.
Center,l eft & right rear would be stakes. Front left & right could be stakes by the tips of the poles (if using the three pole setup). For a rectangular entry (like I've shown), the two front poles are vertical and form the two shorter side of the rectangle. Each pole would require a guyline (as I've shown).
A second entry option would use the front poles extended and connected at the top to form an inverted V, and then a single guyline could be used.
I may be possible to use a single pole at the front in this configuration, however I'm not sure that my trekking pole will lengthen enough to do so.

In the inverted V entry, the beak could also be tied to a tree to allow a 1 pole, five stake setup.

OOooo, now the spelling natzis are out. Thank you for pointing that out. I'm well aware of the mispelling and was intended in order to avoid any possible offending of any actual HHC natzis that may frequent this forum.

Okay...one extra stake and one extra guy line. Still not much weight penalty for having this option.

Looking like I may have to go2grnd for the next scout outing. Been playing around with the HH Hex paper models again. I think this one may turn out better than the previous. Still not sure how to handle the center support. I've got some ideas, but need to try it real world. Option (1) would be to use three poles. Options (2), ridgeline below tarp, attach short pole section to ridgeline to support center. Option (3), ridgeline above tarp, add loop to outside at center of tarp.
