Exclamation SUL Suspension Testing - I am going to die....

By the way, in this case SUL stands for Stupid and Unnecessarily Light.

    First, the disclaimers:
-I do not recommend anyone ever try this, regardless of circumstances.
-I know that I risk personal injury and damage to property (mine) in doing this. I take full responsibility.
-For testing I am hanging low (~3-4") and above a soft grassy lawn.
-I do not recommend anyone ever try this, regardless of circumstances.
-I doubt seriously I will die or be seriously injured from a fall of 4"
-I fully expect the system to fail at some point. The question is when and where?
-I do not recommend anyone ever try this, regardless of circumstances.
-I know that I risk personal injury and damage to property (mine) in doing this. I take full responsibility.

    Hopefully that covers it...

Anyways, on to the SUL suspension I am testing. I made a whoopie sling out of 1.75mm Lash-It. Not designed for suspension, shouldn't do it, I am going to die - see above disclaimers. I used a total length of 5" for the bury on the locked brummel and 6" of bury for the adjustable loop.

In short, it is so far holding me just fine. Including a decent amount of swinging and bouncing. That said, I have only spent about 3 hours total on this one whoopie sling. I am mostly doing this out of sheer curiosity. I have DG whoopies, and the weight savings of Lash-It over dynaglide is almost non-existent (8g) even for a weight-weenie gram-counter such as myself. I had some extra lash-it around, and wanted to try.

I do not plan on using lash it for suspension for overnight sleeping. Ever.

Next on my list is to try lash-it as a UCR.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to have a small Argon 67 hammock with Lash-it UCRs and Kevlar tree straps. 4oz for a hammock with suspension would be crazy....

But, with my NylonD 1.0 and DG suspension, I can get down to about 6oz. Still...

I know I am nutter who is asking for trouble! I just doubt I am the only one.

I'm sure we won't hear about the inevitable failure. We never do. Folks who use Zing-It 1.75 mm for suspension get real excited, it breaks, then we never hear from them again on the topic.

Really? That stinks. But, I guess it makes sense, as I came up with almost nothing when I searched the forum.

I will do my best to post here when the failure comes. From what I have heard, it should occur at the locked brummel.

I really want someone to try out the argon .67 hammock...

How hard was it to splice?

Here is a link to a thread on an Argon 67 hammock. No update for a while though, but some cool ideas. Particularly, how he reinforced the edges, and the softshackle connection on the UCR. Honestly, next time I put an order in from dutch, I will add 3yds of Argon 67 just for this experiment. If it works, it would be just plain awesome. I have also thought about making it a DL but only in the middle 1/3rd or so, just for some extra strength.

Honestly, I didn't think it was too hard at all to splice. I use old telephone wire that is nice and thin with smooth plastic coating. It may be that other tools wouldn't be as easy. Don't know as I have only ever used that wire. Not as easy as Amsteel though. But hey, at 5g for a whoopie sling...

EDIT: Just for clarity, what I am using isn't Lash-It technically. It is the 1.8mm Techline from DIY Gear Supply. I don't think that it would make much difference, but I suppose it is possible.

I haven't had luck with 1.1 oz. hammocks and sure won't try anything lighter. Here's a thread on an Argon 90 hammock that died.

FWIW, the weak point and consistent failure point of whoopie slings subjected to destructive testing is the point where the free end of the adjustable side exits the adjustable bury. Never at the fixed eye splice (locked brummel).
