    MSH with carabiners

Not a lot of experience with whoopie slings. Anything wrong with using carabiners (climbing grade) instead of toggles with the MSH? If you clip one end of the carabiner in the MSH and the other end has the whoopie, it seems like it eliminates the risk of the whoopie coming off the knot. Also, the load on the carabiner is correctly orientated along the longitudinal axis of the biner. Thoughts?

If you do a little research the MSH really isn't a knot made to hold tension. It's more of a stopper knot and that's why we're using a toggle and the "load" is sitting on the knot. There's probably another knot you can/should use with webbing if you're planning to use the biner in a tension type setup as you describe. Unless you're doing gymnastics the issue of a loop or whoopie coming off the MSH is pretty small. Small toggles are much lighter than a climbing grade biner too.

I used carabiners with a MSH for years with no issue. When your packing up, open the gate on the carabiner and slide the MSH off. I've since gone to cinch bugs, at least for awhile. I'll probably try something else, when I get the notion to.

Plus one there. I use a carabiner as a toggle on the MSH and have had no issues. I would advise checking your webbing, but that's advisable anyway. My MSHs are quite loaded.

I don't think the OP is talking about using them as a toggle. I believe they're planning to loop the whoopie or continuous loop through the biner so it connects the two.

I've done this a few times. No issues...... yet!
I doubt it's the proper use of the MSH, I haven't looked into it, but it's worked on short hangs with just straps and CL's.

I frequently clip a biner into the MSH, I have for years and will continue to do so. The heavier the load on it, the tighter a MSH will hold.

A preferable method to a rod toggle, in my experience.

C.A.M.P. Nano 22 biners are only 22 grams, are rated at 21kN! It's only my opinion but why use a marlinspike ever, when you can sleep 100% securely rather than wonder about reliably resting the weight on a marlinspike's knot instead of the spike, as you're supposed to do? Makes no sense to me when you have an inexpensive featherweight climbing biner as an option. You always know 100% it cannot slip or move or snap (that's rare), as sometimes happens with the MSH. The biner is not only immensely strong, it has a gate, it's a "closed aluminum loop" that people hang their lives on, even when falling.
