I bring a blue CCF pad (I picked it up at REI for not much $) that I cut in half and then I also bought a decent sleeping bag (off craigslist) that I modified by reducing the length in half (sewed up the edges so the nylon doesn't keep fraying). I have Ridgebacks that I camp with and like your Bailey - they are very-short haired and love to be covered up with the sleeping bag. I also bring along a sweater for them. They have their own pack and most everything fits in it neatly. I carry the CCF pad.

Just like 2ply and theguywitheyebrows I tie a line between two trees and then hook Huck's leash to it. He never really gets tangled in the guylines. I also have his bed directly under mine so I can reach down and check on him or cover him up if he gets restless.

Hope those suggestions help. Have fun! And prepare for a little whining. 2 out of my 3 ridgie's like to camp. The other one is pretty unhappy about going out.

    Have fun!

I love backpacking with my dog Tucker. He always slept in my tent until now. Just purchased a WBBB xlc.

One a recent trip to Thunder Swamp Trail in PA, I took my 5 yo Golden Retriever. I had planned for him to sleep on the ground (5 hiking miles tires him out), and had him tethered to a rather long lead of rope. The problem came when we heard some shots (or fireworks) in the distance. He freaked out and tried to run off. I packed up quick and got back on the trail in the dark. Overnighter ruined.

Point is: keep the pup secure. I know my dog and know that he would have been gone come morning if I fell asleep and hadn't kept him tethered.

I use a cut to size foam pad, and I clip my dog to the suspension. Took him about 10 minutes to figure out how far he could move. By night three he was a pro. If I am lazy and do not want to rig a quilt I will let him sleep on my chest for naps. Warm. That's him in my avatar. Best dog I have ever had.

my dog sleeps right under me, I do tie him up to the tree for the night. I also keep some Glow stick wristbands that I will tie around his collar at night. that way you can easily spot him when he goes on walks around the campsite .

+1 on the glow bracelets. I put 4 o-rings on her collar that stay there and add the bracelet when it gets dark. Kids get one also.
Crayons - they might look different, but they all taste the same

I like to take my dog Molly with me and she has hiked almost 600 miles of the Appalachian Trail. I hang my hammock low to the ground so that I can reach out and give her a pet and she can lean up against me. I also run a length of amsteel line between the hang trees and clip her leash to the line. I have posted a picture of her and my setup in the gallery section.

I usually just attach my pooch's leash to my excess whoopie sling line. He digs a hole on the leeward side of the tree usually, but I do have a sit pad that I use for my ground system backup that I leave out for him if he wants. Mostly he only takes that if the ground is wet. Carabiners for your dog's leash are very handy for clipping him to anything that is around and I always have 2 50' lengths of paracord which I have used as well to attach him to things or give him a bit of a leash run.

I can't imagine owning a dog I had to worry about running off-
If you love them set them free and if they leave well-
There are good dogs and there are people who should stick with cats.

You either cannot have ever owned a dog, or have an extremely limited imagination, then. Every dog owner is well aware that every dog will run off. Especially in a new area with new smells.

Will they come back in a reasonable amount of time (Reasonable to whom?? To the dog, three days may be reasonable!!) is a much more relevant question.
    (insert pithy quote here)
