Ultimate Hang 3 person Hammock Stand!

Here it is. I let my dad borrow my copy of "The Ultimate Hang" , you know, to get him into hammocks. Well, instead of asking me to build him a hammock, he builds me the hammock stand out of the back. It is awesome. It holds three American Size adults with just 3 2x4s.

Those 3 test pilots are not the "American Size" variants...there were three 220+ persons in them, but they opted out of the photo shoot.

Nice. Great quick setup for car camping with a group. Now for the tarps.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

There are pegs near the top for attatching to, but i was seeing what I could do with different lengths and different suspensions.

Ive got some ideas with 1/2" PVC and some plastic painters tarp.

Also now that the "Proof of Concept" is good to go, im thinking of switching the ployepropelene rope for, maybe some wire rope.

    More to come...stay tuned!

Well done Dad! Interesting to see this post as I have been toying with the idea of putting one of these together as a back up for group hangs. Great pics of a good looking stand and some pretty awesome hammock testers.

Y.A.T.S., Yet Another Tensegrity Stand, 3 Person Hammock Stand question

For those who have built one of these stands and used them, Ive got a few questions.

Does the poly rope do the job or should I hold out and order some amsteel?

Is amsteel overkill? If so, what strength line should be used?

There are varying thicknesses/diameters of 3 rebar, in this case is one size better than another?

For the uprights, Ive seen 2x3s and 2x4s used. Is the smaller sufficient or for 3 adults, should I really go with the larger?

Treated or untreated wood or does it matter?

1 line for the side and bottom lines or are 2 better?

    Lesseee...where to start...
The poly rope is strong enough, but it is "cheap". It stretches a lot, doesn't fuse to well at the ends, and the sheath snags on EVERYTHING. I ended up potting a ratchet strap to tension the top rope, as it is the one that holds it all up. Amsteel would be pretty cool, and your holes could be a smaller diameter. I was thinking of using shackles and wire rope. I dont think theres such thing as "overkill" when it comes to something like this

We used 1/2" re-bar and put a "J" hook in the top. That way if someone were to fall on one, it would just hurt a lot, and not impale them. The hook at the top, however, made it difficult to drive the stakes into the ground. Our next plan is to keep the re-bar straight, so we can drive it in quicker, and then put a 4' piece of PVC tube over them. That way they stand out more, and cover the piece of steel.

2 4's are acrually closer to 1.5" 3.5". I have not really seen 2 3 s before, but would be skeptical.

Treated or not treated is more of a question of use. We had some construction lumber for wall framing. We dont really plan on keeping it up for more than a few hours each time. I'm guessing pressure treated would be good for a longer, outdoor set up.

And we just used one line for each of the three posts. The lower one was threaded through the hole, and the upper was wrapped once

    Hope it helps!
