    Mammoth Cave KY Over Nighter

I just got back from a Over Night trip to Mammoth Cave National Park. After getting my Back Country Camping Permit (Free) and picking a trail, I had to take a short drive to Maple Springs Trail Head witch included a Ferry Ride across the Green River. I Hiked about seven Miles in on the Sal Hollow trail, well really about nine miles because I had to back track for water (lesson Learned)
I made it to Camp about 1830, Set up, Had a hot meal, and slept like a rock in my new BBXLC. I did get a little case of CBS, But I expected that. I only have a PLUQ right now. The next morning was Breakfast, Break down Camp and about Five miles back out on the Buffalo Creek Trail where I met some Horse Back Riders who were kind enough to share a cup of Coffee with me.

It was a Great Trip. If anyone is in the Area, I Definitely recommend it. The Park is Beautiful, lots of rolling hills, small caves, and wildlife. There are plenty of Trails and Routs to chose from.

Looks like a good time. I've visited the caves twice but never looking into camping.

I've ridden that ferry. We went to the caves several years ago.

Interesting and fun looking ferry. Although I have to ask, wouldn't it be more practical and less cost in the long run to simply build a bridge?

I did a car camping overnighter with the family at the campground next to the ferry. It was early enough in the season that the ferry was still closed. I'm glad you posted pictures of the area, I hope to do a over nighter up there. Its about the same distance North of Nashville as it is for me to go east and camp.

I backpacked all through that area back in the early 80's do not remember any ferry . But we had a good time ,fill you flask, cos if I do remember right, someone in our group had to drive a long way to get his filled.

We were on our way to Nashville to spend a week in the town ,boy they love there cars as much as they love there country music there .

I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip. When I go to MCNP I do riverside camping out of my kayak. It's still one of my favorite trips! I can take everything I need and don't have to worry nearly as much about weight as you hikers. Green River is always a great paddle thru the park.

I did that trip in September '08 with a bunch of friends... rented some boats from Vandy and camped at the mouth of a small cave just off the river. we had a blast... did some nighttime floating to see the stars and ended-up seeing some foxfire along the banks of the river -very cool! there sure ain't much of a current in that river, though

Wow, this brings back memories. As a former BG resident and WKU student, I had many trips to the area. Some I remember and some I don't. (Age and college stupidity) if you know what I mean. I will have to look into going back and spending a couple of night there. That is a great place. Did the "wild Cave Tour" back then. I wonder if they still have that...
