First Hammock Build - Taffeta Tablecloth Construction

First and foremost, this is my first attempt at making a hammock. I've got the bug. I'm going to update this thread as the project develops. As of right now, I have a taffeta tableloth with whipped ends (x10 wraps). I used 550 paracord for the whipping and used a symmetrical fold to gather the ends. Construction of the whipping will be the only time during the project that I use paracord. I ordered tree straps and continuous loops with cinch buckles from DutchWareGear. I also bought a pair of Madrock carabiners from Amazon. Just for fun and to change things up, I also bought 6' whoopie slings. If somewhere down the line it looks like I'm doing something wrong, please let me know (the hammock is set up for display only in the picture below). I'd rather not take the field trip.

Thanks! I'm waiting for the suspension to arrive. My next 2 items on the list are bug netting and a tarp. I thought about making a tarp, but I'm on the fence. Does anyone have any suggestions for bug netting? I don't won't to start a new thread just for that. I can't seem to find a whole lot of information for add-on netting.

I just grabbed 2 window sheers from the local wally-world and sewed up one to drape over my SRL. It took about 10 minutes and works fine. It's not exactly light-weight though if that matters to you, but it keeps bugs out.

That whipping looks great! I would also suggest using window sheers, or if you're going to be ordering material for a tarp, add a few yards of no see um mesh to make your big net.

I was going to suggest a different whipping method, but I realized now what method you were using and it's solid.

    Carry on.

Personally, I don't whip because it seems like a black art to me (though your whipping looks very nice). I prefer a sewn channel with a continuous loop through it because it's almost impossible to screw up.

If it works for you, that's all that counts!

My suspension systems came in today! I just have to decide between a whoopie sling or cinch buckle. I also ordered some zing-it for the structural ridgeline.

    Well Done!!

Plus one on the window shears. Very cheap and very economical. I added some small pockets in the top and added some old cut off carbon arrow shafts to help open everything up a bit on the inside. Pictures here. Not the lightest, but for 10 bucks??? OH YEAH!

I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.
