My First DIY Silnylon Winter tarp

This was my first attempt at a DIY silnylon tarp. I used the instructions at DIY Gear Supply as a guideline, more than official blueprints. I used Crimson Silnylon 1.1 and 300D Diamond grey ripstop from Ripstopbytheroll and plastic hardware and webbing from DIY Gear Supply. The Silicon seam sealant I made myself from GE Silicon II and Mineral spirits. I have Tarp Flyz w/ Lash-it for the ridgeline tie-outs, and Zing-it Red for the rest. I use 10' on the main tie-outs (A little extra for porch mode), and 6' on the doors. I also made some snake skins out of the same Silnylon 1.1 but in blaze Orange, also from Ripstopbytheroll.

In the end, due to all the extra stuff I had to buy to make this tarp. It would have likely been cheaper to just go and buy a tarp from one of the many cottage vendors. But this way, I can go into the woods, and say, Hey! I made this tarp! And to me, that's worth something. I actually own, use, and Love my HG Cuben Fiber tarp w/ doors. But I wanted something I could use in the winter, that provided a little extra coverage, and something I wouldn't worry about as much as the Cuben fiber in the bitter cold, of the piney woods.

I think the extra cost and luv you put into that tarp is worth it. DIY gear is so satisfying.

Very nice. How much cat-cut do you have in the ridgeline?

Very nice job! looks like that should keep you good and dry. I still need to make my own tarp and I'll be 100% DIY on my sleep system.

The ridgeline is actually sewn straight. It's just angled like that because I couldn't put enough tension on the ridgeline using treking poles, and put too much tension on the tie-outs.

Nice work, indeed! I hear ya about spending extra on something that can be bought cheaper, but you can't get the same satisfaction as DIY gear.
