    Good Quilt System

    Hi all,

I'm a noob to hammock camping, and plan to get WBBB in a few weeks. I had a question about top and under quilts. I was looking at the Warbonnet system. And it'll run me $475 for both the top and under quilt. Is that over-priced, or about average? In the world of sleeping bags and tent camping, I suppose an entry level down bag and a nice air mattress would be about in that ballpark too.

On another note, could folks through out some major brands so I could have a starting point to research? Thanks!

Ok, it's pricy but also top of the line.

Basically if you can afford that, you'll be fine.

But, if you look around you can go modular. Instead of the $200 hammock, get a dutch special, wilderness logic, or simply light, and pair it with the bug net design of your choice.

Second, do you feel like diy?

Other quilt manufacturers are marginally cheaper, but the designs also differ and you might get more bang for the buck elsewhere (the yeti is kind of small for one)

You can look around and find some chapter options. Underground Quilts is a good place to start. Wilderness logics is good too. But you are going to run into things like differences in length and fill with a small price difference from one place to the next. DIY is good if you are so inclined. A little cheaper but not by much and you'll be out a bunch of time.

I wish I could DIY, but so much of my free time is tied up with my money-pit of a house, so I just don't have the time to sew up a quilt. I do intend to try to make a 3-season tarp over the winter though. I checked the price of goose down for a quilt system, and the price savings of doing it myself just isn't worth it to me.

That's helpful to know that the price differences are marginal. I'll check out lengths and fill and go from there I guess. Is there any other stickies or anything that list the best brand quilts out there so I can research through a list?

Thank you!!! This is just what I was looking for! I see Wilderness Logic's prices seem significantly lower than most. Is there a reason why they are so much cheaper?

I don't think they are significantly lower.... For a 20° full length down UQ..... You are looking at ~$250 no matter the vendor.

If you are not new to the outdoors sleeping thing,, you could use your old sleeping bag as a top quilt,, and spend the money you have on a under quilt then down the road get a TQ .

I use a good UQ and a cheep wool blanket sometimes . I do have few old sleeping bags that I will still use now and then , but with a good UQ. But when backpacking I take one of my TQ/UQ cos of how light they are .

But if you are camping or just going to hangs you can get away with just about anything .And yes a good down bag and mattress could be more then you posted above for that set up ..
