Isuka Pilgram Down Sleeping Bag as Hammock Pod?

    Hello,

I ordered a Hammock Gear Pheonix Underquilt last night. I am excited to receive it, but imagine it won't arrive to me in Japan until sometime in August. However, I am planning on heading out on a 4 day hike in a few weeks, and want to use my hammock. I am guessing that we will hit around around 60F in the evenings, but want to prepare for the possibility of colder weather.

I am considering purchasing an Isuka Pilgram sleeping bag, and thought that I could use it as a hammock pod until the HG arrived. However, I wanted to get some opinions about it working the way I hope based on the product descriptions.

Does this seem big enough to work as a pod on a 10.5 Half-Wit Hammock with a 6'2" hanger?

    Specs indicate that it is 80cm x 215cm (31.5" x 84.5") with 720FP down. It weighs 470g and is rated to 50F.
At $140 it seems like a good deal.

It has a nylon construction with a full length zipper.

My biggest concern is how I will get the hood to stay against the hammock. I don't want to make any radical changes to it as I would like to use it as an extra top layer if needed once I get the HG.

Anyway, any thoughts on the sizing would be appreciated.

There is really only one way to find out if it will work as a pod insulation system and that is to try it and find out. For the one trip you have coming, I would be inclined to get an inexpensive closed cell foam pad and just use it for the one trip until your underquilt arrives. What do you plan to use for top insulation on your trip? This sleeping bag would be a good top quilt.

    Cheers

    Brian

    I can't see how a pod system would work with a half-wit.

I would just use a pad, why spend the extra money if you don't know if it will work or not.

    Thanks for the input folks.
@ ksbcrocks: Thanks for your comment. I forgot that the bug netting of the halfwit is attached part way up the hammock (have yet to use it beyond a test hang), so it would be pretty hard to use a pod system.

I think I will just use a pad this time around.

You wont be able to lie diagonally in your hammock with pod. So if you arent comfortable with a straight lie, I would go with the pad.
