I checked February of the list last weekend the 27th and 28th. My brother and I backpacked at lake Vesuvius in Wayne National Forest. This was my first outing with my new top quilt the low that night was 33 degrees which I handled no problem. gopr2282.jpggopr2295.jpg

We're gonna be at No-Be-Bo-Sco in April. It's supposed to be a cabin camping trip, so I'm not sure if I'll be inside or out. Fun hiking there, though.

Tell me about that tarp you have; it looks different from any I've seen. Thanks.

It is a Hennessy Hex tarp it probably looks different because of the wide angle go pro camera.

Ok, thanks. That explains why it looks like it's on a hoop of some kind.

I got in my March hang and 7th of this series this past weekend at Blue Mountain Shelter, Georgia AT.

I parked my car at Unicoi Gap and hiked south on the trail. It is a fairly steep 1 1/2 mile climb to the top of Blue Mountain but a beautiful one.

It passes a nice boulder field.

The path can be narrow with sharp drop offs if you aren't careful. You could see for miles without leaves on the trees. I could see the tip of Tray Mountain in the distance. At 5,000+ feet it looked huge in comparison to Blue Mountain. (Sorry no pics of Tray M.)

I stopped for a rest on the peak of Blue Mountain and finally figured out how to use the timer on my camera to take a selfie.

The next .9 mile to the Blue Mountain shelter was awesome skirting along the top of Blue Mountain. The AT is on the crest line of the mountain. With the sun out and 55 degree temps, it was perfect hiking weather.

I made it to the shelter around 3 pm. It was already packed with AT thru-hikers. The shelter is right on the top of the mountain with a nice view from the front.

There must have been 40 people camping around the shelter area most of them thru-hikers. We got a great fire going but nearly everyone was in bed by 8:30. (I stayed up and watched the fire until 10).

I set up my hammock in porch mode to watch the sunset. It was very nice.

I met one guy about my age (late-40's) who was hiking 30 mile days. He had started the previous day on the Amicalola Falls Approach Trail and was at the 50 mile mark on the Appalachian Trail at the Blue Mountain Shelter. That was 59 total miles in two days. Trail name Diesel. A very interesting person to meet.

The temperatures fell into the 20's overnight but were not as cold as on previous winter overnighters. An ice storm began in the middle of the night which sounded cool on my tarp.

I woke up early on Sunday and hiked back to my car with the sun just coming up. An excellent overnight trip.

7/7 with a wonderful backyard tester. I put together a SUL kit (5# base weight). Slept great and only woke up to go to the bathroom. I could feel a little condensation on my back though. It's been so long since I've used a pad. image.jpg

I see this as a huge success since my first ever trip had 45# before food and water. This kit including the hammock stand is still lighter!!

The month of March has been ticked of the list with an overnight hang at our district Scout night hike. Now 7/7.
