Having a pretty rubbish time at the moment, and the end of a pretty rubbishy period in my life. I have a lot to be thankful for, but my work life has been for too long unrelentingly unrewarding, frustrating and full of utterly unnecessary issues and conflicts. Just tried a (brave?) jump to another job to eradicate a lot of this sort of nonsense, and it ended in disaster. Currently hunting for another job. The situation is, as we say here in the UK, "utterly pants".

In light of the sudden freedom I have had dumped on me, I dusted off my hammock gear and went out for a local one-nighter. It proved to be a real tonic for me. It gave me a sort of peace and space that I just haven't been getting. Admittedly the gear linkage on my car packed in on the short journey home which will result in a hefty repair bill at a time when I could least do with it, but hey - that's just how life is rolling at the moment! Yes, I know - boo-hoo.

In retrospect I think it would have been a great idea for me to have followed this "one night a month" thing, and that I really need to do it going forward. It will "force" me to take at least a little window for myself rather than continually putting trips off because they have to be big, long jaunts. I think it would help me retain at least a little perspective on things and make me a little calmer husband and father. It will also "force" me to face a whole range of temperatures and conditions and to immerse myself into learning about adapting my gear and techniques, which in turn will equip me to deal with all of them and thereby reduce the excuses I make for not going out.

Great concept I think this "one night a month" thing - and one which I wish I latched onto long ago. Thanks to the forum for bringing it to my attention. Hope you are all having some fun and peace with it yourselves.

It really does force those of us 'too busy' to make time to enjoy the little things and relax. We often get so emursed in day to day life we don't step away and look at it, we just look at the big picture. Sometimes we need that short break, even if for one night.

Good luck with the job hunt.

Yes, it's amazing what just a few hours away from the crap of life can do for you. I live in Bangor (PA, USA!), but in the country, and all I have to do is walk outside to my setup for a "night away". It's a small change of pace, but it doesn't matter. It really makes a difference when work is getting in the way. Chin up and hope it levels out for you soon.

Made it #25 this month. Set up two rigs, one for testing and the other for back up.
The weather is starting to turn just like the leaves. Bring on the snow and cold.
I may post elsewhere about the testing but here is the backup setup...

    Gear loft...

Getting out each month does make a difference and offers a lot of time to test gear and yourself in many different conditions.

#26 in for October. Just a yard hang checking out my seam sealing on my OMW and a new mule tape suspension. The Mule tape is gonna need more work, but a heavy storm during the night seems to indicate the sealing was good

This is the first month so far that it is taking me so long to get a hang in! It's killing me! First week was at a show and last week just busy. Going to hit it tomorrow night maybe or midweek. I miss sleeping in my hammock more than I realized I would!
