DD Jura 2 Sleeping Bag + top quilt + underblanket

    Hi everyone,

I have the DD top quilt and underblanket and was pretty cold on a recent camp. I don't think I had the underblanket on right, but I'm a cold sleeper anyway and so am thinking about getting the Jura 2 in addition to try some winter camping. Would using the Jura 2 in combination with the top quilt bring the comfort rating down enough for British winters? I'd got my pack weight down to 7kg so am a bit disappointed I have to add to it, but needs must. I've never, ever had a night out camping where I've not been shivering, determined to fix that somehow, just can't afford down quilts etc. Any advice appreciated.

    Jo

i'd get a cheapish second hand down sleeping bag to add to your TQ, and save up for a winter weight down UQ if it were me
my -20*c down UQ is smaller and lighter than DD's -5*c UQ

You could also add a sleeping mat to beef up the UQ as well

Thanks Sunndog, have been keeping an eye out for used down bags but haven't seen anything under the £100 mark.

Have you thought about a hammock sock or insulated over cover?

Ukhammocks do a sock for £35 iirc

I'll be trying an overcover this winter. I'v got to learn to use a sewing machine then do some mods but this is the kinda thing

Or if you sleep REALLY cold....mega cocoon (that sleeping bag packs down to about 35ltrs! )

No I hadn't considered that, I think that might be part of my solution, thanks! I think I've spotted a cheapish down sleeping bag instead of the Jura, so will probably try that with the sock from UKhammocks and maybe a mat if needed, until i can afford some nice down quilts. Thanks again!

I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with the ukH sock....i'm on the top of a hill near buxton and serious gales are the norm here in winter so i'm considering a sock meself

    On down UQ's
See that first overcover pic, thats two £10 childrens sleeping bags zipped together, really meant for indoor use
Well one of those coupled with the -20*c UQ does me down to just about 0*c.....i do sleep warm but it gives you an idea what a good UQ will do

Check Gumtree and charity shops for down jackets and duvets.

Be sure to check tags as some are listed as down feather. Are they down , feather, or a mix?

Oh a fellow Derbyshireian! I will let you know, it won't be for a while as I spent all my cash this summer changing from tent to hammock and getting pack weight down. I like your ideas with those sleeping bags. I'm going to keep trying things until I can sleep comfortably. I bid on a few down sleeping bags but didn't win, going to have to get synthetic for now as I'm eager to get out.

Thanks bodhran4me, will dig around, cheers for the advice.

I hear you can send sleeping bags to UKhammocks and they will adjust them for use as quilts, so that might be an option.
