Hey all, I’ve finally upgraded to whoopie slings and I have a bunch of questions about the toggle + marlin spike hitch and what could theoretically work as a toggle given its function in the knot and the forces on it. I really don’t want to carry objects whose only function is to work as a toggle. I know it’s not really that much weight / space, but the principal of the thing gets to me. With that intro, here are my questions:
In a marlin spike hitch, how much weight is carried by the toggle? Is the toggle just helping the knot hold shape, or is it holding you up?
So for example, could I use an old Bic Pen for a toggle? Could I use a twig or stick? I know I wouldn’t walk across a bridge made of any those.
Does a toggle need to be something rigid? Could I use a rolled up dirty sock as a toggle? How about the working end of the rope folded over on itself a few times for thickness?
How much movement is there across a toggle? Will the rope rub against the toggle so that a serrated toggle would lead to certain disaster? Could I use a key as a toggle? I’m carrying 2 keys anyway.
