Went to Rum River State Forest for an overnight.
And if you haven't been, the location is basically a few miles east of HWY 169 & 280 street.
Wow, was I pleasantly surprised.
Gravel roads everywhere, and it looks GREAT up there.
I saw someone driving a small Kia 4 door, so there's no worries of getting stuck at all.
Would even be fine or a motorcycle if one were so inclined IMO.
Lots of water features, different kinds of forest to tramp around as it looked to have miles and miles of hiking, and bushcraft opportunities.
In a few places at the pullouts, there were the remains of small campfires.
I could see where there would be ample opportunities for camping either in a large tent or small.
'Wherever' you wanted to set up shop.
There are even posted signs about deer hunting and trapping going on in the area, so larger game is definitely in the area.
Drove all around the place and found the 'range'. Basically people shooting into a couple large berms.
It looked like it would be fine for 2 people or so upwards at upwards of a couple hundred yards in the lane if you really wanted, or multiple short range opportunities.
There's no trash can to speak of and I must say that so many people left all manner of garbage up there.
Just a shame.
I was hammocking in my Dream Hammock Thunderbird and such a joy as the wind was blowing nicely all night.
Didn't bother with the top-cover, just had the bug net up.
Being so far away from a major city, the light pollution was very minimal.
Made me wish the camera on my phone took better night pictures, and once things calmed down the sounds of the forest came alive.
I could hear waterfowl, and some small creatures rustling through the forest nearby and then later on wolves or coyotes in the distance.
Truly one of Minnesota's gifts to us to enjoy.
I was thinking that it would be a nice place to get together with like minded people if they were so inclined.
