    Video: Dealing with Large Trees

Last year I came across a situation that my system couldn't handle so I had to get creative. This year I came prepared with anything that I might need, but my new system handled it without using anything that I normally don't carry backpacking.

The video was really jerky due to the low light (filmed while it was raining), so I kept the audio and selected a number of stills from the video.

Just a few more weeks and SpeedHooks2.0 should be available

There is quite a lengthy thread in the Dutchware sub-forum on it. Quick recap is that they can cause fraying of the Amsteel. It can be lessened by making sure that the hitch is tight before getting in the hammock, but it still happens. I had my leads on for 8-10 outings before I swapped them out with 1/8" Amsteel....no sign of wear on these yet, but I only have 2 week long hangs on them.

Dutch has been saying Speedhooks 2.0 would be out in two weeks since time immemorial. I gave up waiting a while ago and just went back to Whoopie Hooks.

    Suspension set-up for large trees

    Hi doogie

Here in Northern California, if we are hanging in redwood forests, it is not unusual to have to deal with redwood trees that can be up to 8ft in diameter. Typically I carry 10ft tree straps (made of mule tape) to get at least part of the way around the trunk of the tree. I combine that with UCRs to complete the tree suspension. The only problem is that the longer the tree straps are, the heavier your rig is- but sometimes you don't have a choice...

Your combination of tree straps and slings to encircle the trunk is very similar to what I use.

In the attached grainy photo, we have three hammocks hung from a one trunk of a redwood stand...

Im a big guy, I don't need my AmSteel fraying.
I guess I just keep these hooks in a pile of other stuff, or think of something else to use them for.
