Hammock Sock vs o degree incubator

I am looking to get as many seasons out of a set up as possible. I am getting ready to spend some coin on it. I was wondering if you could give me opinions on wether to get a 20 degree incubator and burrow and a hammock sock, or get a 0 degree burrow and incubator without a sock. Or a 0 degree incubator and a 20 degree burrow. Going to linville Gorge in January. Thanks.

It's not an either/or question, and it depends where your focus is. How many times are you going to sleep in temps below 20°? What percentage will that be of all of your camping?

The sock is not going to add warmth - it's just going to stop heat loss by keeping any breezes out of your down. While I have no first hand experience (so far I have only slept outdoors in three seasons, and never below freezing), it seems that socks will get a condensation problem below 32°. If you're planning to do a lot of winter camping, you should probably get a 0° quilt. If most of your camping is above 20°, go with a 20° quilt and supplement with a pad when temps drop lower. If you do a lot of camping and 50% in winter, you should seriously consider 2 sets of quilts.

I find that a canvas sock adds about 15 to 20 degrees extra warmth. So far I've never had a problem with condensation (down to 1but other canvas sock owners tell me that I'll get it around zero degrees and below.

The 20* pairing along with a winter type tarp should be sufficient to keep you warm. Snugging the tarp down and closing the doors will give the effect of a sock. I've taken that setup down to -7* and woke up a little cold in the morning, but slept through the night without discomfort.
I'm set up now with 20* quilts and an insulated UQP I just made. Night time temps are in the 30's to low 40's and I don't snug up the TQ until early AM.
It's almost too warm and I'm a very cold sleeper.

A sock seems like it would be a pain. Just one more piece of gear to set up, pack, buy, etc. And pulling the whole thing down and losing all your heat when you need to hop and and take a pee seems worse than slipping out from under your waiting, warm quilt.

I really want to try a hammock with a winter cover instead of a bug net. Though I am a little worried about condensation. I would imagine it would be similar to a sock?

My set up is 0 ° flight jacket tq and a 0 ° underquilt with uqp, if i get too warm i loosen up the uq and i allso use a fleece liner in my tq, and i push the tq down to my belly untill about the middle of the night or when it gets colder then i just puul it up and warm right up and go back to sleep.
My thoughts on this is why put yourself in the position of not having enough warmth if the weather turns, better safe than sorry, imo go with the 0 ° set up.

Well I have been quite happy with hammock sock from Mac. Been down to 2 degrees with it and no condensation problems.

Now that's what I want to hear! So do you use it in porch mode at all?

I have a 0F incubator and burrow, and a DIY sock from 1oz ripstop (tubelike, with a drawcord opening).
    Socks are nice.

No matter how thick the down, you might get drafts now and then. That means fiddling with UQ adjustments at 2am before sleeping warm again. I've had to do this even around 35F!

The sock blocks drafts even if your UQ shifts a little, and lets your insulation really shine. When camping in 10F weather, I definitely want that sock with me! I've never had condensation problems, even cinching it completely closed overhead. It also offers a little extra privacy when hiking in groups.

I also use the sock to hold my hammock and quilts together, and stuff the whole package into a trash compactor bag at the bottom of my pack. It's like a Lazy Slug Tube
