    knot help for a noob...

can someone list the common and maybe some not so common knots used for hammocking and their uses? I was a scout once upon a time but find myself trying to remember and practice and realizing i really don't know which knots would be important to know for hammocking. I would imagine a variety of hitches but what others?

this is great!!!! it's exactly what i was looking for. i have an app on my phone, but it's 100's of knots and no specifics on their use. I can take the pages and illustrations i'd likely use most in the field, downsize and laminate! thanks for this!!

This is one of my favorites. There are 100 uses for a bowline, but the best thing about this knot is that it is easy to untie!!! But I can NEVER remember which way the rabit goes around the tree and if you have it wrong then the knot doesn't hold. If you use this method to tie it then it is never wrong and OH SO FAST.

PS Choose a few and make them your own. It takes a little practice to have the knot you need in mind and be able to tie it. I went so far as to make diagrams so I could remember the knots I wanted to use and practice them. (It should be noted that I have learned some new ways that are easier than these)

Wow... You guys are wicked smart!

All I ever use is a bowline (to attach the line to the tarp) and a truckler's hitch or Andrew Skurka's nifty variation for everything else. Maybe a slip knot or a figure eight once in a while.

He has a great blog post about rigging tarps that really emphasizes the KISS principle, which works for me!

JmBoh, hammockers choice of knots varies, with all the great knots available. Even though I love knots I try to avoid them unless needed. Some of the knots I use stay tied so I don't waste time. When possible I choose knots that are tied in the bight(tied in the middle of the rope without access to either end of the rope), and if a knot is quick release and non-jamming and easy to tie and does its job well; then it is good. Further study on your part may be needed. Here is a list of my favorite hammock knots. Larks head, Marlin spike hitch, prusik, alpine butterfly loop, farrimond friction hitch, slippery half hitch backed up with half hitch tied with the bight. As you can see, I've chosen to use knots that have as many of these features as possible. Semi-permanent knot that is tied one time and never tied again. Or knots tied in the bight, easy to tie, quick release and non-jamming. The last thing you want during take down is a cussing gob knot. And I've forgotten Siberian hitch and multiple pile hitch. Good luck.
