    Hammock Size??

My daughters and I are looking to buy our first hammocks this fall in anticipation for next years camping/backpacking season. I want to start relatively cheap, even a table cloth hammock to start, then if it is something we like we can upgrade. My questions if I am 6'3" and 195lbs and my daughters are 5'8" what size, width and length, of hammock do we need. Sleeping flat and on our sides is important. Thanks

Most commercially produced hammocks (ENO) are between 9 and 10ish feet. You can find an 11' @http://www.dutchwaregear.com/11-ft.-...-hammocks.html. The fabric used will determine the weight capacity. With your daughters being 5'8" they probably don't need an 11' hammock, but it is all a matter of comfort and what your intended use is. Being a UL backpacker I try to squeek by with the bare minimum for weight and size with my whole kit. If you plan on mostly car camping then go all outs, packing lots of weight isn't any issue and comfort is KING.

I recommend to buy an 11-footer from Dutch.

What your intended usage is the key. supposed this would be overnight at Summer above 50F, you probably don't need under quilt, tree strap and tarp are essential, and consider bug net if skeeter would bother you. TheUltimateHang is a good reference for Hammock camping.

I am just trying to understand what width and length of hammocks we would need to sleep as flat and as comfortably as possible. The rest I will figure out latter this winter.

Thanks Mittagsfrost, I will look into his hammocks. Where can I find them? What width would you recommend on a standard hammock?

Also check out http://www.hammeck.com. They make 11' hammocks and can increase widths based on fabric chosen.

Hammock length and width work together. Width is usually measured as the width of the original fabric, minus a small allowance for edge treatments. There is also some consideration that must be made for construction.

One of the best simple reads I've found come from Papa Smurf at Dream Hammock in their "Choosing Your Hammock" section. See http://www.dream-hammock.com/Choosing_Length.html for length information and http://www.dream-hammock.com/Choosing_Width.html for width. It doesn't really get simpler than their explanation.

Then realize that other construction techniques can change the equation a bit. I'm 5'10" and can lay flat in a Hennessy hammock which is 9' long by 56" wide. There's just more room for error and more room to move around on one of my Dutch 11' x 60" hammocks. However, my daughter (only 10) who is 4'11" has to deal with much more floppy sidewall fabric in an 11' foot hammock, so even though she lays perfectly flat a slightly smaller hammock would be more convenient fer her, at least until she grows into one.

    Hope that helps.
