    Give your hammock the finger!

Next time you are setting up your hammock, with an eye towards optimized comfort, give it the finger!

Here is a way to quickly estimate the 30 degree suspension angle for hanging your hammock.

    30 degree finger.jpg

Step 1: Extend your right index finger vertically.
Step 2: Extend your left index finger horizontally.
Step 3: Place your left finger against your right finger so that the top of the left finger is even with second crease of the right index finger.
Step 4: The line between the end of the right finger and the third crease of the left finger will be a close approximation of a 30 degree angle.
Step 5: Adjust your suspension as needed to match this angle.
Step 6: Switch hands (or sides) to adjust the opposite suspension.

    Knowledge weighs nothing.

You can also just use the tip of your thumb to the proximal (first) knuckle with the same results....no need for the second hand

Gmcttr's one-hand method. Works like a pistol too. (Pew! Pew! Pew!) Usually comes in an ultra-light, left- or right-hand version!

Measure your fingers' angle at home so you know which method works best for you.

That's the way I do it. Works fairly well, and is easier than two hands.

That proximal angle method yielded 35 degrees. My wife got 32.

My hand works exactly out to a 3-4-5 triangle. pretty awesome. Thumb is 3", 4" to my 2nd proximal interphalageal joint, and 5" from tip of thumb to tip of the knuckle.
