Donna seems to be wary of snaps, even when reinforced on the edge binding. I have two on mine for when my doors are rolled up. So far so good but one does have to be careful. She even put pull tabs on the loops where the snap was attached so I could grab it with gloves on. It was a PITA before the pull tabs to get them apart.

How's this for a concept? Looking for feedback.

    rationale:
    1. One door instead of two 1/2 doors minimizes material required. (The overlap required for two doors.)

    2. One door panel sewn to the tarp edging, other door panel fastened with toggles tie, snaps, Omnitape, ??? This is where more R&D is required.

    3. Center of doors able to be staked out so one door panel can be opened while the other in place.

    4. Provide enough material to allow for various tarp pitch angles. A wide tarp angle pulls the center in, a narrow angle pulls out the center.

    5. The whole door can be rolled up and secured with ribbon ties against the sewn side.

Issues? The best way to fasten the door on the open side? An overlap required? A combination of toggle and loops with omni tape? Open for ideas for the best solution. I do plan to kick this around at Mahha. Lots of creative energy usually there.
I have toyed with the one door approach and think that it has merit, especially if one is able to get in and out of the tarp easily. I was thinking that shock cord would do it, but I have not played with it to verify it yet. The idea of staking the excess out when in storm mode is great.

How confident are you about snaps? I could experiment on your Ultra!!

    Ha!

Well, I'm pretty confident of the idea with double doors. I don't forsee that they will be added or removed very often. I would likely put them on in the winter, and take them off in the summer. All the other action is simply in staking/unstaking the doors. That's pretty minimal wear on snaps, I think. I admit that I haven't used them, though.

Does anyone reading this have experience with the WB Superfly with snaps on the doors? How are they holding up?

My Ultra can be the guinea pig when you're ready.

Update - after asking around, it seems that the snaps are too wide to be placed properly on the edge binding of the OES Gen3 tarps.

I had the same thought. Shug's example seems spot on to how I would probably set one up. Can you say Vestibule! Plus, you know it's been field tested already!!

On the different tarp sizes, you could just pick a "standard" tarp angle for each size that feels right for the doors to seal shut like Shug's do with velcro. Anything steeper and users can go "thin" and overlap. Any wider and there will be an opening.

Velcro seems to make some sense, as does a zipper. Weight difference?

Sil on my SpinnUL would be just fine... Color? what's that? When I'm still sleeping instead of resetting my tarp I could not care less about color. My only concern is that I do not want the slight tension on the overlapping doors to upset the taut pitch of the tarp. With the cat cut of the OES, I assume there is geometry there that goes beyond 9th grade.

What about small toggles and shockcord (to secure the doors together)? One at the bottom and maybe two more up the door (dividing it into thirds). After all, we are just trying to stop wind gusts and blowing rain.

Well, ZQ and I are satisfied with just sewing doors on the edge binding and overlapping them. Overlap distance will have to be figured but Javaman's comments make good sense. I like the look of my #3 coil zipper but it would be more expensive and not as easy to deal with when the hands are cold and the gloves are on. Not entirely out of the question however, maybe an option. Grizz's beak still needs some more R & D as a removeable option. Isn't this fun?!!
