    Whoopie directly to hammock?

Took some great advice from this forum and was able to splice a few whoopies together. Neat little project.

I can see how I can connect whoopie to strap with a marlin spike or larks headed through a loop in strap.

On the other end I see a lot of options on how to connect whoopie to gathered end hammock (table cloth variety). Hooks, rings, continuous loops, etc.

What am I missing if I simply use larks head again? The only think I can see is a drip barrier? Or having it all stay together when not under load?

    Would welcome your wisdom.

    Thank you in advance.

    John

I have my whoopie connected directly to my gathered end. I've noticed no issues at all.

Whoopies larksheaded through the hammocks end channels work great with no additional hardware needed at the hammock ends.

What they said. Just a larkshead through the end channel... or a larkshead under the whipping. Either way works fine.

I did something similar on an Eno, except with a UCR instead of a Whoopie. First I made a two fixed loops in a shorter length of Amsteel (Dog Bone?). After taking into account the tapered bury from the loops, the dog bone has to be long enough to provide enough grip for the longer length that passes through the bone. After putting a fixed loop in one end of the longer length of Amsteel for the marlin spike end, I passed the other end through a prussiks loop formed on one end of the dog bone and then buried it in the dog bone.

I made it more difficult by making it with a UCR and a prussiks. It did save me some line and weight.

My next hammock suspension will be about as simple as you can get. Fixed loop at one end, larks head to the hammock. Then use a marlin spike on both the tree straps AND the Amsteel. It loses the adjustability of the whoopie/ucr, but I can tie a marlin spike in a couple of seconds.

I had a problem with short hangs when the whoopies were attached. I'm using Dutch bling attached to hammock ends. I can use whoopies or Python strings or attach the hammock directly.

I've always liked Dutch Whoopie Hooks since they are a water break, and they allow me to pack wet suspension separate from the hammock. One October night I got in my hammock during a pouring rain, and in the morning me and my quilts were wet. I couldn't figure out why, then I saw that I had pulled the adjustable end of the whoopie into my hammock, bypassing the whoopie hook, allowing the water to run straight down the whoopie and into my hammock.

    Lesson learned.

I agree, plus less to keep up with.

My UCR's are larks headed just inboard of the whipping on the ends of my hammock. The tail of the UCR works as a water break too.

Ok, so I am not missing anything. Good to know.

Will instruct youth on the whoopie slings but share photos of Dutch bling, mule tape, biners, etc as other options.
