I just completed my first DIY hammock tarp and am really stoked about the way it turned out. I have been a lurker here for some time and the information sharing has really been a tremendous resource for me.
The tarp dimensions are 132" at the rigdgeline and 80" wide at the outside of each panel. The panels are 60" wide. I used a cat cut 5.75" over 80" (pdf file of template attached). The tie outs are 3/4" grossgain with plastic D-rings. I reinforced the tie out points with 1.9oz ripstop scrap I had laying around (I would use coated oxford on another tarp). The reinforcements for the sides were triangles created by cutting 5" square in half diagonally (I would use 6" squares on another tarp). I used the same 5" squares for the ridgeline but left them in tact and trimmed to the cat cut (if doing again I would use 6" squares). I put loops of 1/8" shock cord through each D-ring at each tie out point to help keep the lines taunt. The tarp weighs right at 12 oz. with all the tie out cords but minus stuff sack and stakes.
When I cut out the tarp I started with the above dimensions so the length is actually about 130.5 with the rolled hem and the width of each panel is more like 59.25 at the widest point. I was really happy with the choice of using a rolled hem to save weight. It pitches well and gives great coverage.
I left it pitched through some heavy fall winds and with the shock coard tie-outs it stayed taunt and handled the wind quite well.
Bottom line, I just wanted to brag a little with those who would appreciate the final result.
I have attached my cutting plan which includes two different size tarps and a file to create a full size catenary cut template.
