Any pad would have to be extremely flexible to work. (more like a blanket than a pad) The issue is the pad would not conform well to the bathtub shape of the hammock, leaving gaps and cold spots.Originally Posted by mwm
I've tried .1" PE foam sheets (Laminate floor underlayment) It's not flexible enough to work, except in small pieces. Thinner insulators (insultex or really thin Polyethelyne foam -- used in packaging electronics, typically.) work really well.

After playing with this underquilt for some time, I made some modifications to the design. The problem with the gathered end also acting as the attaching point to the hammock is that I wasn't able to get a good, snug fit around the ends since they were continually being pulled taut. The tweak I made was to separate the gathered end from the attach point so both could be modular. I think this is similar to how professional UQs are made.
This design loops some shockcord through the ends so they gather and flex. I put fixed line (550 cord in this case) along the long sides. On one side, I was able to thread the cord through the hem channel. On the folded side, the cord just hung between the two sides. I attached this new fixed cord to the ends of the hammock with a bowline, which also gave me loops. Through these loops, I passed a section of doubled-up shock cord which was then attached to the hammock.
This new design provides a much more workable fit.

This was such a good use for the poncho liner and an easy project to make. By adding some velcro to the end with the ties you can not only make it into a underquilt but also a light sleeping bag for ground use (if it ever sadly, came to that) or to use in your hammock in warm weather. I have had the idea to sew in a layer of sil-nylon to the bottom layer with channels for the cords so it could also be used as a water resistant splash guard. if i get around to finishing it, I will post some pics.

Anyone use this design with a Hennessy Hammock? I was thinking of a simple tie-out with a tarp clip and then loop the side tie-out back onto the clip (through the tarp ring from the HH).
Also, what about putting mylar like Tom Hennessy suggests, on top of the PLUQ Pair to provide some reflective insulation? It's getting a little chilly in WNY and I'm thinking warm is a good thing.
I've used a space blanket in other UQ's for additional insulation. In cold/dry climates it seems to be fine, and add 5+ degrees of comfort. If it's damp out, you'll wake up damp and cold...

I first made my PLUQ for my Hennessy. Worked great. Loops on the outer edges can be tied/clipped to the side pull-outs on the hammock.

The UQ that I bought didn't have the loops on the outer edges, so I went to home depot and got the tarp clips. In the asymmetric configuration, clipping to the side tie-outs really makes sure that the UQ is following my lie in the hammock. Here's a pic of what I ended up doing:
